What scanner (Flatbed scanner or Portable Scanner) is good?
Tried portable scanner and it is not useful much.
It is rolling credit card receipts and after couple of times we are seeing black scratches on images.
It is difficult to clean scanner frequently.
Conclusion: Image quality is good with flatbed scanner with compare to portable scanner.
Flatbed scanners are cheaper than portable scanners.
What software is good with scanner?
Generally each scanner seller provides basic software to scan images. That is good enough.
We need not to spend money on any other products.

How to divide pictures in single scan?
Step 1: Scan all receipts / photos using scanner with its default software.
Keep as many as possible on glass and scan them.
Avoid overlapping.
Step 2: Use GIMP to multi crop and deskew the pictures
Download and install GIMP from http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

Unzip and copy deskew.exe to \GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins

Filters==>Batch Tools==>Batch Divide
You can see divided images in target folder.
